US President Donald Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to be the new Secretary General of the United Nations (UN). According to The New York Post, Trump and Infantino have become close during the organization of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
In December 2025, the head of the football governing body presented the first-ever FIFA Peace Award to the US President.
Trump believes that Infantino is widely respected in the world and has the ability to bring people together. He also thinks that the Swiss football administrator has a good chance of getting the job.
The current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will step down in December. To become a candidate for the vacant position, one needs to be approved by the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.
It is reported that Infantino's position on the matter is still unclear.
