"Young and promising players noticeably dominate in the Azerbaijani chess championship among men and women."
According to Idman.Biz, Azerbaijani grandmaster Rauf Mammadov expressed this opinion after the opening ceremony. He noted that the current championship could yield unexpected results.
"The first time I participated in the Azerbaijan Championship, I was 15 years old and became a champion. So, surprises are still possible now."
"Today's youth are very strong. I would say that all 30 participants in the men's championship are fighting for the title. The confrontation between experienced grandmasters and young chess players always leads to interesting and tense battles," he said.
30 male and 16 female chess players will compete in the Azerbaijan Championship. The total prize fund of the competition is 92 thousand manats. 62 thousand manats of the amount belong to the men's championship, and 30 thousand manats belong to the women's championship.
