The Azerbaijani men's chess team has moved closer to winning its fourth title after securing an important victory over the Ukrainian team at the European Team Chess Championship held in Batumi, Georgia.
According to Idman.Biz, in the penultimate, eighth round of the continental championship, the Azerbaijani chess players defeated the then-leaders Ukrainians with a score of 2.5:1.5.
Rauf Mammadov secured the national team's only victory by defeating Andrey Volokitin with white pieces. The remaining games involving Shahriyar Mammadyarov, Eltaj Safarli, and Aydin Suleymanli ended in draws.
Before the eighth round, the Ukrainian team had 12 points, while the Azerbaijani team had 11, indicating that the two teams are now tied. Additional indicators show that the Azerbaijani chess players are ahead.
The position of Azerbaijan in the final tournament table and its opponent in the final stage will be determined after all matches are completed.
It should be reminded that the Azerbaijani men's national team has been the winner of the European Championship three times.
