French national team referee Tantašev was criticized for his management of the match against Paraguay in the 1/8 finals of the 2026 World Cup.
Sport.Biz reports that the French edition of "L'Équipe" evaluated the referee's decisions in harsh terms.
The publication wrote that the match was intense and the referee did not react to the rough play of the Paraguayan players:
"In a struggle unsuitable for children to watch, Paraguay's provocations and referee Tantašev's absolute incompetence helped Desiré Dué to save France from a serious problem".
"L'Équipe" also drew attention to the large number of yellow cards shown to French players and the unpunished roughness of Paraguayan players. The publication noted that Tantašev only awarded a penalty against Desiré Dué after VAR intervention.
Note that the French national team won 1-0 against Paraguay and advanced to the quarterfinals. Didier Deschamps' team will face Morocco in the next stage.
