FIFA could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over a "controversial" decision to reduce the punishment of Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo after his sending off in the match against Ireland (2-0) in the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.Biz reports this with reference to the "Daily Mail" newspaper.
It was previously reported that the Portuguese player received a one-match disqualification and a two-match suspended sentence.
According to the source, teams that will face Portugal in the first two matches of the World Cup group stage may appeal to CAS. They must prove that the decision to punish Ronaldo with only one match directly affects their interests and reduces their chances of advancing from the group.
The teams must also prove that FIFA's decision to reduce Ronaldo's punishment was wrong.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee suspended Cristiano Ronaldo from one match of the Portuguese national team for receiving a red card in the match against Ireland. The football player has already served this sentence by missing the match against Armenia.
It should be noted that Cristiano elbowed an opposing player in the match against Ireland. The disciplinary rules stipulate a minimum penalty of two or three matches for violent behavior.
