Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye has announced his retirement from the Senegal national team after losing 2-3 to Belgium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. According to Sport24.az, the footballer shared a post on his social media account:
"I'll come back later to say a few words about our withdrawal from the competition... But today I announce that I will not play for the national team as long as this coaching staff is in charge".
Note that the 26-year-old Gueye has been playing for the Senegal national team since 2021. He has scored 7 goals and made 2 assists in 45 games for the team. He played four games at the 2026 World Cup and scored 2 goals and made 1 assist in a match against Iraq.
