The new president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Giovanni Malago, has offered Paolo Maldini, a former player of the Italy national team, the position of technical director of the national team.

According to the source, Maldini has not yet made a decision regarding his possible appointment to the FIGC. In addition, the Italian football leadership is looking for candidates for the position of head coach of the national team. The main candidates are Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte. Mancini is ready to return to the national team for 2-2.5 million euros per year, but the FIGC prefers Conte, although in this case the amount would be close to 4 million euros per year.
Earlier, the Italy national team lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final of the playoffs for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup (1:1, 1:4 in the penalty shootout). Head coach Gennaro Gattuso was dismissed.
