Former Italy player Paolo Maldini has been appointed as the new technical director of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
Sport.Biz reports that the information was posted on the organization's official website.
Maldini's assistant will be Leonardo, former player, scout, coach and technical director of "Milan".
Previously, Italy lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff final for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup (1:1, 1:4 in penalties). Head coach Gennaro Gattuso was dismissed. Italy's last participation in the World Cup was in 2014, when the "Azzurri" left the tournament in the group stage.
The Italian national team has won the World Cup four times, in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.
