According to ESPN, the European Parliament intends to investigate the relations between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup.
Sport.Biz reports that previously, the US President had called Infantino and asked him to cancel the red card of a US national team player in the World Cup. FIFA indeed canceled the player's removal from the team, but according to the organization, this was not related to Trump's call.
It is noted that more than 30 complaints and letters of protest regarding the cancellation of the US player's red card have already been sent to the FIFA Ethics Committee. The European Parliament believes that "Infantino and FIFA are bowing to the demands of the Trump administration".
The investigation will determine whether Trump's call to the FIFA president influenced the decision to cancel the red card.
