A new grandstand is being built at the stadium of the French club "Strasbourg" from parts of decommissioned aircraft.
Lent.az reports with reference to foreign media that the company "Populous" has presented a new environmentally friendly stadium construction project. 30 Airbus 340 aircraft were dismantled for spare parts.
The southern grandstand is being built with a covering made of 196 fuselage segments. This method made it possible to save on building materials. The total reconstruction cost of the stadium will be approximately 180 million euros, and the fan capacity will increase from 26,000 to 32,000.
This is the first example in the world of using aviation waste in a large-scale architectural stadium project.
"The grandstand, located in the La Menu district, was designed in cooperation with the architectural firm Rey-de-Crécy. The structure creates a sustainable sun protection system (brise-soleil) by combining 196 aluminum segments cut from aircraft fuselages. This system not only regulates light, but also gives the building a bright and shiny appearance," the report emphasizes.
According to the company's president, François Clement, the idea arose in 2020, during the quarantine period, when the aviation industry suspended flights and many aircraft were decommissioned.
Clement says: "We tried to reimagine materials that had lost their function and give them new life in a sustainable architectural context."
