Christophe Dugarry, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, has criticized the new format of the tournament.
Sport.Biz reports that the current tournament is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams.
"I evaluate the difficulties. In the 1/16 final, 1/8 final, and quarterfinals, we face weaker teams than us. I've been saying this for years, but I see that international football is getting worse from year to year. FIFA formats only offer playoff matches.
This allows us to discover teams like Curaçao or Cape Verde who can offer us sensational matches, which is great, it makes these teams happy, but we get bored. And in the end, out of 104 matches, we'll probably enjoy 10 real games, 10 more or less interesting matches, and the rest will be rubbish," Dugarry said, quoted by RMC Sport.
