Argentina's national team drew attention with a political message after beating England.
Sport.Biz reports that Argentine players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("Malvinas are Argentine") on the field after the match.
Note that the sovereignty of the archipelago, called the Malvinas Islands by Argentina and the Falkland Islands by the United Kingdom, is disputed between the two countries. In 1982, a war broke out between Argentina and the United Kingdom over control of the islands, resulting in the islands remaining under London's control.
Recall that the Argentine government had previously banned fans from displaying political slogans and symbols during the World Cup semifinals. This decision was reportedly aimed at preventing possible violence.
Earlier, Argentina's security minister, Alexandra Monteoliva, told "La Voz" radio that fans with shirts or flags depicting the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands would not be allowed to attend the semifinal match against England.
